UFC 56 was held on November 19, 2005 at the MGM Grand Arena on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise.

Headlining the card where the two TUF 2 coaches, Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes, scheduled to put their UFC titles on the line.

Rich Franklin was defending his Middleweight Championship belt in the main event fight of the night against Nathan Quarry.

Joe Riggs was taken in as a substitute for Karo Parisyan, who sustained an accidental injury in his preparation initiating to the fight. Although in the first place scheduled as a title match, Riggs could not make the expected weight at 170 lb and the fight was converted to a non-title welterweight fight.

The huge Brazilian fighter Gabriel Gonzaga was making his first appearance in the octagon against Kevin Jordan in a fight he won via KO with a superman punch late in the third round.
