Streetfighting in Mixed Martial Arts – The best tickets seller style ever – From Tank Abbott to Kimbo Slice

kimbo_slice_11Streetfighters: The glory days of the early UFC, canonized by the delicate Tank Abbott and more recently by EliteXc with the Youtube sensation, Kimbo Slice.

This non-style of fighting is hugely based on the fighter natural abilities. – heavy hands-

The only way a brawler can deliver the goods in a sanctioned fight is to be totally unpredictable and extremely aggressive.

Due to an unorthodox approach, a streetfighter can overcome, at time,  a skilled and more knowledgeable fighter who can get confused by his unusual attacks and be tricked by his inability to read a rational offensive.

Despite the extremely limited tools a streetfighter has, Streetfighting is really popular in MMA. The crowd loves those bullies and prefer them over any stylistic fighter who follows a strict game plan. Tank Abbott became an instant crowd favorite at first fight and still continues to sell tickets, even if he is an overweight washed up fighter who carries a losing record over years.

Tank Abbott Highlight Kimbo Slice StreetFights

At the begining, the UFC tried to use Tank Abbott to make the BJJ fighters look good… They expected him to lose, and they failed. During those times a good pair of hands was good enough to demolish one dimensional martial artists. Nowadays it doesn’t work anymore.

EliteXc, the recently defunct company tried to use the same maneuver with the Youtube sensation Kimbo Slice. It only lasted 4 fights…

Nevertheless, the guy was actually pretty good at becoming the most loved/hated fighter ever BEFORE his first professional fight.

In fact, this case should be studied by marketing students all around the world as being one of the most booming successes at getting almost immediate worldwide recognition, selling almost nothing and using free tools to get there, while making money on the process!

Kimbo Slice Vs. Tank Abbott

It just didn’t work after a few fights. The caliber of today MMA fighters do not allow the same tactics of the old days.

The Kimbo Vs. Tank was the pinnacle of their careers. The two most well known streetfighters live on CBS! That’s the best matchup they could possibly find, and it was the greatest Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Fergusson fight ever.

The accidental injury of Ken Shamrock during warm up the day of their fight, forcing Seth Petruzelli to steps in, puts an alt to the Kimbo career for quite some time and an end to ELiteXc presence on CBS… Forever.

The famous fight that reveals the Kimbo Slice limits and started a keyboard warrior crusade everywhere online.

Kimbo Slice Vs. Seth Petruzelli

Streetfighting style is basically used to promote average marketable fighters and sell tickets.

For uneducated viewers, the sport of MMA is quite hermetic when it comes to ground fighting and BJJ moves. They need something easier to cope with, in order to put a foot in the house.  Here come the freak shows and street brawlers.

Sadly, for their career length, they can’t fool fans for a long time. At  one time or another, they have to face serious opposition…

Quick reminder:
• Tank Abbott record: 9-14-0
Kimbo Slice record: 3-1-0

It speaks for itself….

Streetfighting brought to MMA: Butts into seats, excitement and tough reputation for the company.
