MMA Brawl

This is the first fight between the two biggest mouths in MMA. Ken Shamrock, once a great fighter, was already beyond his prime for this fight. His glory days were over since his epic battle against Don “the Predator” Frye in Pride 19, only 9 months prior to this fight.

Ortiz won a rematch against Guy Mezger at UFC 19: Ultimate Young Guns on March 5, 1999. Mezger was a Lion’s Den member, an MMA academy created by Ken Shamrock.

After the fight, Tito Ortiz wore an insulting T-shirt that said: “Gay Mezger is my Bitch” and flipped the bird to the Lion’s Den corner.

Ken Shamrock got mad at him and used it, three years later, to create a feud between them and to put butts into seats. UFC 40: Vendetta was the highest-selling MMA Pay Per View events of all time in 2002.

As you can see in this promo video, Shamrock pretended to educate Ortiz and to teach him some respect. “It’s about time you learn some respect”… “When I step in the ring you’re gonna have to prove it, ’cause I’m going after you and I’m taking that belt off your waist and when I’m done with, I may step on your head”

Another good Shamrock line, after Ortiz said:  “I’m really happy that he signed the contract” was “Care for what you whish for… I’m gonna take your soul”

The only problem for Shamrock is that he took all the beating and couldn’t go on further round 3 because his corner threw in the towel, living Ken Shamrock with a pizza face in the middle of the octagon.

They even produced a DVD that regroups all the Ortiz/Shamrock feud entitled: “Shamrock vs. Ortiz: The Untold Truth Behind UFC’s Legendary Feud”
