Judo in Mixed Martial Arts - from Remco Pardoel to Karo Parisyan

Posted by Zdot on Nov 19, 2008

judoJudo was created in the late 1890’s. Founded by Kano Jigoro a former Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who gradually added his own techniques and modified completely the grappling martial art into a new one.

He later formed the Kodokan School at the beginning of the 20th century, which became the original judo school of all time.

The Jiu-Jitsu is a style made to counter aggression and requires strength while Judo use techniques that put adversaries off balance, and utilizes leverage. Judo is a more peaceful martial art made to win without causing necessarily damages.

Both martial arts are quite similar. They both grapple standing up and on the ground, use joint-locks and choke submission techniques, takedowns, leglocks, wristlocks and spinal locks. The throws being the trademark move of Judo while BJJ puts a bigger emphasis on joint manipulations and chokes.

European Judo Champion Remco Pardoel was the first to compete in the octagon at UFC 2. He lost via Lapel Choke in semi finale against Royce Gracie.
