This was back when paulson was more like just a wrestler his grappling game improved a lot after this fight.
Was Lesnar even training with Paulson when he faught Mir? Either way I don’t think this fight shows that Paulson is not “as good as he’s made out to be”, but that Newton is (was) a great MMA grappler himself.

Those were great transitions going into that armbar. That fight was all about flow and control.
Barnett is an ok MMA grappler but couldn’t hack it in ADCC.But even so he was trained primarily by Matt Hume.I never said anything about not liking Lesnar and I actually think he’s good.But if you’re training with a so called leg lock specialist, there is no reason to get caught in a kneebar like Lesnar did and not know how to get out.My point is that if Paulson was as good as he’s made out to be he would not be getting caught in a armbar in less than a minute by Carlos Newton.
Barnett is an awesome grappler… He out grappled big nog in one of their fights and nog is a beast on the floor. And you may not like him, but Lesnar also trains under Paulson.
I know Matt Hume taught him, I aso knew that if I said Paulson has never had any successful students that you would bring up Barnett, so I had to assure you he is no great grappler.The fact that you admit Barnett is not a student of Paulson shows that he is not a successful coach as that would be your only arguing point.Paulson has taught thousands of people and not one is successful.Does that sound like someone whose technique works.Paulson is unrealistic and so are you apparently.

Erik Paulson has had great success as an MMA fighter and as a trainer and instructor.
He’s a highly effective grappler with penetrating insights into the art. Carlos Newton is simply very, very impressive.
