Battlefield Kali Single Stick Certification Program Introduction Video

A brief introduction by Burton “Lucky Dog” Richardson to the methods used in the Battlefield Kali Single Stick Certification program.

That is all about fighting, not about theoretical technique. Battlefield Kali will be added to any martial arts program to enhance the functional weaponry features of training. The primary emphasis is to develop the abilities essential to defeat an opponent who’s resisting 100%!

But, we have now a progressive system based mostly upon secure sparring. I need to embrace my sincere thanks to all my lecturers, but especially to my guide since 1980 Tuhon Dan Inosanto. He’s the most knowledgeable martial artist on the earth, and he is extremely beneficiant with that data which has taken a lifetime to garner. Maraming Salamat Po Tuhon!

@MrByaeger Thank you for your kind words. I learned this attitude from my mentor Sifu Dan Inosanto. The only thing greater than his humility is his generosity.

  • MrByaeger says:

i like to go out of my way to compliment Mr. Richardson on pretty much everything he does, not as an expert myself but on the idea that wherever he is at in his progression in the arts he chooses to share it wholeheartedly with others without ego. he just wants to teach other people what he knows at whatever level they may be at. and he will put himself in real situations to prove it. to place being a teacher before being a “master” is to truly be a master in my humble opinion. RESPECT.

  • bsumiko says:

Burton Richardson is a GREAT instructor – period. End of story. Nuff said.

  • ATACXGYM says:

@BurtonRichardson Reality show? Like that Dog Brothers docu?

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@ATACXGYM I think it will be awhile before full contact weaponry fighting is accepted by athletic commissions. Maybe more of a reality show venue.

  • ATACXGYM says:

Can Varable Intensity be used to make kali tudo palatable to various State Athletic Commisions?

  • ATACXGYM says:

    @BurtonRichardson LOLOLOL WELL SAID BRUH!!

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@ATACXGYM Will do. Hard to argue about swimming with those who have never been in the water. :)

  • ATACXGYM says:

@BurtonRichardson Kali tudo as a professional sport? State Athletic Commissions by and large still get woozy at MMA events, lol.I don’t see them sanctioning full contact w/minimal armor. BATTLEFIELD KALI is profitable but it’s not a sport dependant upon PPV sales. Kal-tudo would be the penultimate sport combat model; guns+kali tudo (my training method) is probably “The Final Level” like THE LAST DRAGON.Lol.

  • ATACXGYM says:

@BurtonRichardson I have been arguing that very point–passing doesn’t happen unless the guy is tryingto rip your head or guts out and you parry and/or dodge the blow–for YEARS now,Burton. My kali and Concepts friends–especially Concepts–INSIST that my rare employment of the pass is due to not cultivating the skill to FORCE a pass on an opponent’s attack or block. When you put out a single stick disarm DVD? Lemme know so I can buy it and show these guys what real OG stickfighters do.Thanx!

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@ATACXGYM I will put out a disarm DVD in the future. There are certain disarms that can be achieved in an all out situation, but there just aren’t that many of them. It is about getting into position.
The full contact with little armor will bloom when it becomes a professional sport. Then everyone will want to train realistically.
Those riots- those were a few extremely tense days!

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@ATACXGYM Until people get out and spar all out, especially with limited protective equipment, they will live in the world of theory where everything works. Passing happens when the guy swings so hard that you can’t stop the blow, not because you choose to pass the stick.

  • ATACXGYM says:

@BurtonRichardson Yeah I remember the riots, lol.Guys came and got me from work to be sure that I was in it because I was the msot sensible guy in the area that was also from the “hood”.Lol. Question: will you put up single stick disarm videos? I have afew of my own but I really enjoy your expertise on the matter.Do you see events and training like yours and “kali tudo” as the future? I’ve been endeavoring to train that way long before I heard of kali tudo, but it’s hard to find guys who’ll do it

  • ATACXGYM says:

@BurtonRichardson I noticed that you don’t really do that inside or outside parry and pass to the stick that I see alot of CONCEPTS guys and alot of kali drills feature.I have an idea as to why you would NOT really do so much in a fight, but…could you explain why in your own words? My escrima friends and I have been debating this point…

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@ATACXGYM Thank you- MMA is very young, and there is A LOT learn from the TMA. We just have to train it in a realistic manner, meaning with resistance.
Pacific Avenue in LBC- that was an interesting time- riots and all!

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@JH2lio Thank you for the compliments. As far as the grip is concerned, I also leave about an inch below the fist for punyo strikes and a little counter balance. The gloves may make it look like it is flush. Enjoy your training!

  • JH2lio says:

i LOVE the way you’ve systemised the whole program, congrats! quick question though, i noticed you guys hold the stick at the very bottom. i used to train in inosanto kali and was always taught to hold it an inch or two above the bottom, mainly to make use of punyo strikes

  • ATACXGYM says:

See,I was going to say alot…but then bsumiko said BEAT ME TO MOST OF IT.Lol.Burton,you have progressed dramatically since your days back in LBC with your school on Pacific Avenue, lol. I absolutely love your idea of MMA for the street and adding escapes (something I’m adamant about) to your teaching curriculum. I also like how you’re not automatically condescendingly disrespectful to TMA like too many MMA meatheads are.Well done and I’m buying your stuff.

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@bsumiko Thank you for the kind words. In class, I always make sure that the students treat sparring as though it is a real fight, with real weapons, without any armor. It helps to really understand the art.

  • bsumiko says:

Thank you for this video, Mr. Richardson. You are a very skilled, yet humble person. I really like the way you and your students spar. Very controlled – no wild, rushing in, mindless clashing and bashing. I especially like the way your students always RESPECT the weapon, even when using a padded stick. Great instructor, great students!

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@kenshin9518 I can get by in Tagalog, but I don’t know the whole language. I grew up in Carson, California in an area with many Filipinos. I learned quite a bit growing up, and I have been to the Philippines about ten times.

  • kenshin9518 says:

@BurtonRichardson you speak filipino! have you been on the philippines?

  • BurtonRichardson says:

@kenshin9518 Maraming Salamat Kenshin. I have various instructor ranking from different systems, including from Tuhon Dan Inosanto and GM Antonio Ilustrisimo. I started training in 1979. Ingat!

  • kenshin9518 says:

hi there!im a filipino and an escrimador too.i ussually look on americans as never could be good enough on martial arts(especially on kali)but when i saw this video i though wrong. i was really impressed on your had block technuiqe, very good.whats your rank anyways?lakan isa?
