Ankle weights are a good alternative to develop and toning your lower back. Lots of fighters and fitness practitioners are using ankle weights to maximize their workout.
The Back kick exercise is one of too many drills you can do using Ankle weights.

You can use the Ankle weights to harden your jogging or treadmills routines. You can even roll, do your BJJ, or practice your kicks with them on. Actually, all the drills involving leg and ankles movements can be done with a pair of ankle weights on.
Con: Some people find them hard for the joints and ligaments and prefer to wear a weight vest. It supplies weight for resistance, but the weight is better spread on your body. Keep in mind that the weight vest is useless for drill like the back kick. The price is of course higher than regular ankle weights.
Ankle weights are also good to improve your jumping abilities and of course your cardio. You can even turn maniac and put them on all day to do all your duties. It’s a bit extreme and might hurt your ankles, but I personally know fitness guru doing it. (I think it’s stupid…)
